MISS BLACK SASSY
I look good, smell good, and talk like I should.
Wave at all the men who wish they could.
When I enter a room, heads turn around.
Men stand at attention, while the women sit and frown.
I had to study hard, work two
jobs, and pay my way through school.
There
was no time for playing around or acting a fool.
I speak with confidence and stand tall.
I didn’t do it alone; my savior saw me through it all.
I’m Miss Black Sassy because that’s who you want me to be.
You are afraid to really get to know me.
But don’t
feel threaten by the things that I do.
I don’t
walk around trying to find ways to judge you.
I might be fat or I might be thin.
One thing for sure, my beauty comes from within.
You’re judging the cover before ever reading the book;
All behind just one look…
When
you look in the mirror, tell me who do you see?
Is it you or is it me?
You see, I’m not the one that’s Miss Black Sassy
But Miss Black Sassy wants to be me!
The Power in You!
Take back your power
to choose your own destiny.
It shouldn’t be the decision of a 12-man jury.
You’re
giving up the right to be free.
“Free” …Did you hear me?
As
though you’ve earned it or paid for it with money.
It was our ancestors who died for you and me!
You
may reap the benefit but they paid the price through slavery.
For every slave lynched to
a tree,
You pull the ropes tighter whenever you give up your dignity.
The
civil rights movement wasn’t so you could become a number.
It was to show that
in unity they can’t keep us under.
But you have the power to turn things around.
Don’t
just sit there with your head hanging down.
Get up! Find the strength within you to
stand strong.
On top of the world is where you belong!
“I
am somebody” includes you too…
If you don’t know where to start, ask yourself “What Would Jesus
Do?"
